58: PFAS Chemicals in Bubly and other Beverages

Emma Rohmann Episode 58

If you’re an avid Bubly, Topo Chino, Polar, La Croix, or Perrier drinker, you’re definitely going to want to listen up. But this episode is really for anyone because I’m going to talk about regular drinking water as well.
In 2020, Consumer Reports tested 12 carbonated water products for 30 PFAS, or Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances. These are the chemicals used to make non-stick coatings, stain-repellant, waterproofing coatings, fire fighting foam, and more – and they have become a serious problem.
I’ll be covering what PFAS is, why it is so concerning from a health and environmental perspective, what the Consumer Reports study found about its presence in carbonated water beverages, the problem with drinking water quality regulations in general, and what alternatives you have to enjoy a tasty fizzy drink.
